Photo Meme...

7 Awesome Comments!
I've just been tagged in a photo meme by Robyn, a bloggy friend. It seems kinda fun and it's always nice to know you have bloggy friends who thought of you when there is such fun meme to join in, so here it goes...

Now the rules:
1) Go to your photo files, select the 8th photo folder.
2) Select the 8th photo in that folder.
3) Post that photo along with the story behind it.
4) Then challenge 8 blogging friends to do the same.

So here is the 8th photo from the 8th photo folder:
Now the story behind this photo? Hmm... this photo was taken at the end of January this year, when Ben was almost 11 months old. Here you can see Ben playing with his garage toy, which was a Christmas gift from his great aunt in Sydney.

It has 3 garage doors, each with its own cars and keys you can lock the doors with. There's a handle at the top so you can carry it around - looks kinda like a tool box actually. Ben just loves to play with this toy cos he can just flips the door open and close and maybe because of the vibrant colors as well.

Now, off to challenge 8 blogging friends to do this meme... here it goes:
1. Baby Makin(g) Machine (I just have to tag you cos' I like seeing the pictures you posted in your blog :D)
2. Happiest Family On The Block
3. Home Grown Families
4. Jenny Matlock
5. Magical Places on Tuscany's Coast (I just love all the beautiful pictures in her blog. You guys should check it out!)
6. peek-a-boo! (I just have to include her since I've been appointed as a bloggy sis by her :P)
7. Spit Happens (Love her Sunday Sign Language meme!)
8. Following the Footsteps (My Personal Blog) (Jen has just recently celebrated her SITS day!)

Writer's Workshop - My Experience with a Celebrity!

9 Awesome Comments!
For my 4th Writer's Workshop, I'm choosing this prompt:

"#1. Write about an experience you have had with a celebrity."

When I was about 19 years old, I worked as a part-time sales girl at this souvenir shop inside a hotel while waiting for my college exam results. The shop owner gave me a set of keys to the shop since I had to open it before 9am and close it when I go for lunch or toilet breaks.

So one time, I was mopping around in the shop, as in just sitting there, doing nothing (what were you thinking?! That I really would be MOPPING the shop floor??! Sheeeesshh... :P) then I saw right outside the souvenir shop there is this group of people standing around, looks like they were having some sort of photo shoot session.

Then I went up closer (still inside the shop) and checked out who might the celebrity be.

Well, turns out he's one of the Hong Kong actor (quite popular then). His name is Lau Sik Ming. He even sang and had some albums back then.

OK, he might not even reached 5% of Jackie Chan's popularity but hey, I take what I can get... and to think that he's right at my shop doorstep! How often do you get to bump into a celebrity right?!

My minds were rushing... thoughts all coming in...

"Should I shriek and call out his name?"
"What if I lost my voice doing those shrieking?" (And what if I fainted and he had to send me to the hospital?!)
"Can I approach him and perhaps get his autograph?" which follows by thoughts of "I wonder if I can sell his autograph hehehe..."
"What if I get shooed away? That would be so so embarrassing!"
"Oh crap, I didn't have a nice book for him to autograph on! How about my song book? (back then I had this small note book which contains my compilation of songs I loved)"

In the end, while I was procrastinating and talking to myself whether I should approach the actor, should I, should I not, I saw the actor walking away, leaving the hotel.. Yikes!

As he was going down the stairs, I quickly took the shop keys, grabbed my song book and a pen, and closed the shop doors, ran down as fast as I could, and called out his name (no, I didn't shriek... no energy after that super quick run to stop the actor from leaving)

He stopped, turned around, and smiled at me. I handed him my song book, gesturing that I'm asking for his autograph, he then took my pen and signed. Then he showed it to me and asked:

"Do you know what I wrote?"

I took back my book, turned it around so I can read what he wrote..
I looked...
and looked...
and stared blankly...
in my mind, this is what went on:

"
SH*T! SH*T! CRAP! CRAP! CRAP!"

You know why???
It's because he wrote in Chinese...

I DO NOT FREAKING KNOW HOW TO READ CHINESE!

Arghhhhhhhh!!!

So I did my best to pretend as if I can't read his 'messy' handwriting...
I pulled up my right eyebrow, looking confused and told him 'no'.

Then he laughed and said 'It's the word for cute' and then he passed the pen back to me and walked on.

Sigh... that is my closest encounter with a celebrity... and to think that I, as a Chinese do not know how to read Chinese... so embarrassing... :P

Well in my own defense, I went to national schools since kindergarten until high school and FYI, national schools are conducted in Malay language, so of course I wouldn't know how to read Chinese characters!

So there you go... embarrassing as it is, it's still an unforgettable experience! :D

Having Fun at the Balcony!

10 Awesome Comments!
We had one of the most hottest weather for the past 2 weeks here in our place. So, to reduce electricity usage (by not turning on the air-cond unit), I brought Ben out to the balcony outside our bedroom when there's no direct hot sun glaring so that we can play and cool off with the infrequent air breeze outside. Sometimes I will change Ben to his swimming trunks and wet the balcony floor and just let him play with the water. At times, I will just let Ben hang around, walking around the balcony and see the view outside.

This is Ben inspecting and pointing at some weird stuff he found on the floor... yeah, it's so hot that I don't even bother putting on pants for Ben...
Here is Ben inspecting the floor again, while standing...
Here is Ben chilling out and looking outside the balcony... noticed how cute he tiptoes?
Here is Ben looking over our neighbor's house and car... For this shot, I have to dangle our camera outside the balcony grill to take this shot... A bit risky, but definitely worth it after seeing how the shot turns out! :D
We played until the sun sets and I managed to take a couple of shots at the sky... The first picture was taken from our right side where the sun has yet to set... while the 2nd picture clearly shows the sun setting... Lovely lovely view! Enjoy!

My Blog is Carbon Neutral!

6 Awesome Comments!
Came across this website which was featured in SITS and decided to join in and support this cause. Excerpts in green colored fonts are copied from the website itself. I've also included the button below in the "Support & Causes" section at my blog's sidebar.
carbon neutral coupons and shopping with kaufDA.de
According to the website, “My blog is carbon neutral” is an initiative, originally started in Germany by the “Make it Green” programme, that has the goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We plant a tree for your blog and thereby neutralise your blog’s carbon footprint for the next 50 years! Everyone can make a small contribution to the environment. Every tree counts!

You can read more about how it works from this website as well. In general, "An average blog causes 3.6kg (8lb.) of carbon dioxide emissions. Consequently, a tree neutralises the carbon dioxide emissions of a blog. Since a tree lives for an average of 50 years, carbon dioxide emissions of your blog can be completely neutralised for this time period."

I believe that every little bit of effort does help. So if you are interested (like me) in joining this, you can read more here. Happy belated Earth Day everyone! :D

27th April 2010 Post Updates:
I have received an email from Christin Gericke thanking me for the participation on this.
My blog is also listed at the participant's site (http://delicious.com/carbon_neutral):

Get to Know Me!

10 Awesome Comments!
Woohooo! This is my 3rd week of participating in MannLand5's blog meme called "Getting to Know YOU". Eight new questions this week for you guys to know me better... here goes:

1. If you could star in any movie genre..what would it be.. romance.. horror.. comedy.. suspense or action?
I think I would have to go for comedy. My life is full of silly mistakes and I can't do anything else but to laugh over it myself... I can think of a couple scenarios, like the time I broke my right arm THREE times in 3 months (oh heck... which reminded me I really-really-really have to blog about this one day! I keep forgetting it!!!), or the time I sent my office laptop to ICU (as in server room) after accidentally poured a whole tumbler of water INTO the laptop (thank God it didn't short circuited the board) or the very recent incident of me banging the car into the parking sign board... (thank God no one is around to see that superbly embarrassing incident!)

2. Do you recycle?
Oh yes... paper bags, plastic bags, clothes and whatever things which are still in good conditions.

3. Have you ever been to a strip club?
I have never even been to any club. Seriously. Oh wait, there is this one and only time I went to this club which has a bar with a group of my ex-colleagues in which everybody ordered martinis and stuff and I got myself chocolate milkshake. Yeah, I'm that innocent and goody good girl :D

4. Do you have a nickname?
Err... my students from my 1st IT job called me 'sifu' (or guru) - perfectly understandable since I taught them about programming for few months. Other than that, nothing silly I guess... ;p

5. What's a name you can't stand to be called?
Jen. My name is Jenny but I can't stand it when someone choose to shorten the name further to "Jen". I mean, how difficult could it be for that person to just add one more syllable when calling my name?

Another name I can't stand is 'Aunty'. Here in Malaysia, once you have kids or as long as you're older or have permed hair (which makes you look older), you're an aunty. I hated this. Nobody but my nieces and nephews and friends' children can call me aunty.

This reminds me of one incident when I was 21 and just spent few hundred bucks perming my hair to this oh-so-awesome hairstyle and I was on my way home in the bus and sat next to this teenager. And just about 1 minute before I reached my stop, she called me 'Aunty' (quite loud) and asked for the time. Hated it...

6. What are your Summer staples?
Here in Malaysia, it's summer all year long. Seriously. I'd go for any iced drinks on any day...

7. What was the last thing you bought for yourself?
T-shirts. Three of them actually. They were on sale. 3 for $50... worth it worth it!

8. Are you happy with your boob size?
Right after delivering my baby in March last year, OH YES! As I was still breastfeeding my baby, it is ermm... quite large in size but now, almost 14 months on... it's back to the normal size... of course, I am still breastfeeding (almost 14 months woohooo!!) but okay, no complains so far :D

Thanks for reading and hope you have a wonderful week ahead!

Five Question Friday #4

12 Awesome Comments!
Yessss!! Half hour more till midnight, meaning I can still make it to post this on a Friday! Anyway, this is my 4th 'Five Question Friday' (or 5QF) - I'm at #38 this week, woohooo! Here it goes:

1. What was the first car you owned?
I don't own a car... I do have a driving license though... just in case, I really need to drive to a place or fetch someone, then at least I can drive a car... :P

2. What song are you embarrassed to know the lyrics to?
Ermmm... NKOTB's 'Step by Step'. Once sang it right in front of the class... I was about 10 years old then. And I actually did the 5 different voices (as in sung by the different members of the band) So so so embarrassing! I was young... and innocent then... :(

3. Have you ever had stitches?
Nope... but I did broke my right arm, about 3 times within 3 months... :P
Oh heck, I've been saying I should blog about this but have yet to get around to doing this... Ok, ok...gentle reminder to blog about this soonest possible... ;p
Oh wait a minute... now that I think about it, yes, I did have stitches! I had an episiotomy when I gave birth to Ben in March 09'. Couldn't remember how many stitches though...

4. What was your first job?
Part-time sales promoter at a shopping mall. I was 16 years old then, we're all having school holidays for about 1 month+, so what better way to spend the holiday then to earn some cash with my own hands? :) I had lots of fun with that job cos' few of my close schoolmates were also working at the same department with me. Kinda like going to school again with your close schoolmates, just no teacher.. and we're getting money at the end of it... :D

5. Who is your favorite Sesame Street character?
Elmo!

In Remembrance of My Beloved Dad...

14 Awesome Comments!
Today is 23rd April 2010... 4 years has gone since my dad passed away.

4 years ago, I get to hear with my own ears from dad, that Jesus is good. I get to hear this from a devout Buddhist, a good man who takes care of his family, a good father who makes sure that his wife and children (a son and a daughter) have everything they need in their lives.

I've been trying to tell dad about Jesus weeks before he passed away. One time, when he was ordered to stay in the hospital for a night, I told dad (after mum and my elder brother walked away) to pray to God if there is 'anything' disturbing him at night.

Being a Chinese, we folks tend to believe in ghosts and stuff, but since I became a Christian, I am not afraid of such evil spirits and I still remember telling dad clearly "Dad, if at night when you're sleeping and there is 'things' disturbing you, pray to your God. If your God can't help you, please try to call on Jesus name. Just try this as a last resort, OK?"

The next morning, when dad is back home, I heard my brother asking him whether there is any 'thing' disturbing him at night, to which my dad just brushed him off by saying no. After my brother left (he stayed at another place with his family), I went and asked my dad the same question.

Me: Pa, did anything disturb you at night yesterday?
Dad: Yes, you know my legs not straight because of the gout, so at night I was sleeping, felt something trying to pull my legs straight.

Me: Maybe the nurse doing that?
Dad: No. Couldn't be cos' the thing keep pulling even though I said "please stop pulling, my legs hurt".

Me: Then did you pray to your God?
Dad: I did.
Me: Did it help?
Dad: No. The thing still pulling my legs.
Me: Then did you call on Jesus name?
Dad: Yes. I said in my head 'Jesus, please help me. My legs hurt'.

(Praise God I'm hearing this, but trying to keep my excitement down)
Me: Then what happened?
Dad: Then that thing stopped pulling. I continued my sleep in peace.
Me: Wah! See, isn't it good?
Dad: Actually Jesus is good.

(Amen to that!)

You know, because of what my dad said "Actually Jesus is good" that I believed.

I believed my dad has put his faith in Him.
I believed when my dad passed away, he is up in heaven with Him.
I believed my dad is in a better place now, and no longer suffering.

I'm glad I'm able to kiss your forehead and tell you 'I love you' every time I wiped your head, face and body when you were bedridden.
I'm glad I'm able to tell you some of the bible stories (children version for easier understanding).

I'm glad I'm able to accompany you at night (even though it means I'm sleeping on the floor next to dad's bed)

I'm glad I'm around when you left us.

I'm glad God heard my prayers that everything be done according to His will, that you leave in peace and no longer need to endure any sufferings.

Dad, even though it has been 4 years now, I still reminisce the time we spent together. I wished I could do more things with and for you while you are still alive. I will always cherished and treasure our moments together. Take care of mum, and I hope to see you guys one day in heaven. Thank you dad for everything. Amen...
John 1:12 (NIV) Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become children of God

Writer's Workshop #3 - I'm Mad At Myself For..

9 Awesome Comments!
For my 3rd Writer's Workshop, I'm choosing this prompt:

"#1: “I’m mad at myself. I’m embarrassed. I can’t believe after all these years, I’m still talking about my weight.” Poor Ope. What are you mad at yourself about?"

Yeap... after all this years... I'm still mad at myself... I'm embarrassed. And yes, I'm still talking about my weight... even after I gave birth 1 year ago. I've blogged about myself eating like a hippo middle of December last year but still looking like a stick.

Ever since I was 17, my weight has been a steady 45kg (about 99 lbs) ... I'm not kidding.

When I got pregnant in June 08', I even got scolded by my gynae for not gaining weight accordingly!

My hubby had to shoved down foods down my throat (OK, maybe I exaggerated a bit here), but, I had to practically downed FULL CREAM milk, every day... just so that I can gained the normal weight according to my pregnancy phase!

This pic on the left is me, around 7-8 mths pregnant.. even the Ikea paper measuring tape couldn't measure my pregnant belly anymore. And look at those stick thin hands... they are still the same stick hands I have now. In fact, I think my hands are thinner now! :(

By the time I gave birth to Ben in March 09', I was 56kg by then... thanks to my almost daily intake of DOUBLE McChicken burgers + DOUBLE Regular fries + soft drinks + chocolate sundae... I had this weird addiction to McDonalds during my last few months of pregnancy... :P

Anyhooo.... after giving birth, my weight slowly went down, thanks to my breastfeeding Ben. Two weeks after delivery, I had already lost 7 kg. By the time I quit my job 3 months after delivery to be a SAHM, I'm back to my 45kg weight. Even now with Ben going on to be 14mths old in 2 weeks time, I'm still breastfeeding, so the weight stays off as well.

You will not believe the amount of food that goes into this blackhole body of mine... I eat more than my hubby. But I'm still shedding off the weight.
I'm mad because no matter how much I eat, it doesn't stay.
I'm embarrassed because ppl who sees me, thinks I'm under nourished.
I'm ashamed cos' I really look stick thin.
And people think that I'm anorexic too :(

Even Ben's wrist is getting to be almost the same size as mine. And few days ago, I just realised that I've lost my butt too... I used to have this fleshy butt which I loved but now... it's gone too...

How horrifying.

I hope you don't think I'm having fun bragging about not putting on weight no matter how much I eat.
I'm not. I do want to put on weight.
I really want to have some more flesh and fat in my body. I really do...

Writer's Workshop #2 - 5 Products My Dad Used...

5 Awesome Comments!
Yeah, I know I'm late again for the Writer's Workshop... I have just got around to having a little bit of spare time to do this. So, for my 2nd Writer's Workshop, I'm choosing prompt #3:

"What does that tell you about your father? List five products your father used (or uses). Write a longer piece about, at least, one of them."

The 5 things (in no particular order) that reminded me of my dad (which he used while he was still alive few years ago...) are:

Code 10 Hair cream
It's not easy searching for a picture of this hair cream. I think it's no longer in production or something :( Anyway, I can clearly remember the smell of this hair cream... manly and quite overpowering. And yes, I did used it a few times during my younger years when I was having my bad hair days... I like it (not the smell) cos it's not strong like hair gel which makes your hair perky and hard. This hair cream holds your messy hair in its place and doesn't make you look obvious that you're putting on any hair cream. Problem is, the smell. Manly smell...

Tiger Balm
It is actually a medicated ointment, which I believe exists in almost all the Chinese people's household. Kinda like a cure-all remedy thingy...

My dad used it for tons of things... scratches, mosquito bites, itches, headaches, coughs (rub on chest and throat), even runny nose. I too used this back when I was younger. And lately, even my MIL is asking for one since her's is running out soon!

Plastic Comb
Although my dad used to have a small patch of hair left, he never goes anywhere without his trusted plastic comb. I still remember the plastic comb is small enough for him to put it at the back pocket of his pants. It's kinda funny looking at him combing his hair (and applying the Code 10 hair cream as well) :D

Electrical Test Pen
My dad used to be an electrician for a few decades. A darn good electrician by the way.

I remembered an old colleague of dad told me that just by seeing the faulty components or electrical outlets, dad can tell what causes the outage or problem and fixed it quickly). So of course, everywhere he goes, there will be a trusted test pen stuck to his front shirt pocket.

His vintage Yamaha Motorcycle
Oh well, it's vintage because he bought it in the early 70s and its still working perfectly fine 3 decades later. The picture shown here is not of the actual bike. It's the closest picture of the bike I can recall and dad's bike is black in color.

I remember dad fetching me to school sometimes and also when I was working as a part-time sales girl during school holidays. I remember hugging him tight when it rained halfway in our journey back home and then how we took shelter under some shop lots, waiting for the rain to stop, shivering in cold cos we were all drenched up in the rain.

I remember how much dad loved his bike. When we stopped at the traffic light, there will be people (either on bikes or cars or buses) who will call for dad either asking him how much he willing to be paid to part with the bike, some will voiced out their admiration of the bike to dad. And most of the times, we will be the 1st to zoom off when the light turns green cos the rest of the people are still start struck with the sight of dad's bike.

When dad passed away, the bike was in a bad condition (unused for a few months since dad was not able to walk few months prior to passing away) and since we were staying in a government flat then, some drug addicts and slackers staying around the flat stole the bike parts, bit by bit... the tires, the exhaust pipe, the handles, the seat, and all that is left were the frame of the bike. I felt sorry for not able to rescue the bike :(

* Note: Dad, thank you so much for all these memories. All though it has been almost 4 years you left us, I still cherish the memories we had together. And going through the above few items just bring back tons of memories and make me miss you even more. Rest in peace dad, I pray that we will see each other again in heaven one day! *

1 Awesome Comments!
I've just added a new chat widget at the sidebar of my blog. Found it from Ayu, my follower's blog.
Tell me what you think? Should I keep it or ditch it?

Video-Ben show how he prays & clap hands!

7 Awesome Comments!
Recorded this on 5th April 2010. (Btw, Ben was 13 months and 1 day old at the time of recording)

We have always make it a habit for him to 'say' his prayers first every time before he have his meals. When we first started Ben on solids (he was 6 mths old then), I will cup his hands together and say his prayers for him.

But when he turns 1 year old, I tried one day asking him how he prays and he clasps his hands together and looked at me... awesome... And one time, when my MIL was having her dinner, Ben looked at her and clasped his hands and she stopped and quickly said her grace and then Ben continues playing his toys... :D

Anyway, enjoy! :D
