Catch It, Bin It, Kill It!

I was trying hard to find this advert which I saw in a UK magazine but found another version instead. Here goes:

I find that this advert has such a powerful statement! OK, it is gross, but only from the gross-ness of it that I read on the advert text. And it's quite chilling statement in fact!
I wish our health ministries are doing adverts like this as well. You can also download the leaflet for more info. Excerpts from the leaflet:

HOW DOES SWINE FLU SPREAD?

Flu viruses are made up of tiny particles that can be spread through the droplets that come out of your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze.

When you cough or sneeze without covering your nose and mouth with a tissue, those droplets can spread and others will be at risk of breathing them in.

If you cough or sneeze into your hand, those droplets and the germs in them are then easily spread from your hand to any hard surfaces that you touch, and they can live on those surfaces for some time. Everyday items such as door handles, computer keyboards, mobile and ordinary phones and the TV remote control are all common surfaces where flu viruses can be found.

If other people touch these surfaces and then touch their faces, the germs can enter their systems and they can become infected. That’s how all cold and flu viruses, including swine flu, are passed on from person to person.

I find that their slogan is real catchy!
"There’s a simple way to remember this: CATCH IT, BIN IT, KILL IT."

Other articles I found on the Net which I think bring a strong message:

You read UK magazines? How, and which ones?

I've seen the Catch it, Bin it, Kill it thing around the workplace. It always always always makes me wonder, don't we normally kill something BEFORE we bin it? =-P

Anyway, these are ways to stop you from spreading swine flu as opposed to CATCHING swine flu.

Same way that wearing a face mask doesn't do anything to save you from swine flu, but rather it's a measure to stop you from spreading it.

So people will take the attitude of "Aiya, I won't get it wan lah", or "Aiya, I got it already, what for CBK (Catch Bin Kill, not something in Hokkien)"

I saw this UK mag which my MIL took from her sister (gossip mag) :P

I guess ppl won't think twice about swine flu they or someone close to them got it. Sad, sad, sad...

Well, actually swine flu is pretty hyped up in Asian countries. Probably because avian flu hit their tourism so badly, even though "only" ~89 people died from it.

89 people out of 6 billion people in the world...Imagine how many people die from car accidents, it still doesn't make people drive any safer.

So in Western countries, they just treat it like any other flu. Like the Nursery I work in, several kids and staff had swine flu. You'd think they'd close the place down for a week or something right?

Not even close. They just put memo's up on the wall saying there are "unconfirmed" (yea right) cases of swine flu, and every safety precaution is already being taken bla bla.

What's their safety precaution? Putting up a few posters showing those catch it bin it kill it. Wonderful!

Mark, the kids & staff at your nursery who got the swine flu, how long they take to recover? I guess until there are cases of death, there won't be any serious attention to it la..

Mumzzy, now the only time I bring my baby out is when he's due for his injections and every Sunday to church. Other than that, just stay at home only...

The staff, although supposedly you read in the papers they're supposed to be quarantined for like 10 days, they actually normally gone for only about 3 or 4 days. i.e. they come back the next week lah.

As for the kids, normally a week plus as well. Usually longer, if they end up being hospitalised...But even after they've recovered, their parents would probably keep them home for awhile.

It is scary, yes, but actually even before swine flu, the kids (and staff) get ill all the time, including needing hospitalisation.

The terrible thing is that you can clearly see it's caused by cross infection. What's worse is when you see a poor child that is obviously ill, but the parents still insist on leaving them there!

To me, it usually feels like a childcare is the best place to pick up a disease. =-P I really can't think of anywhere you're more likely to get ill, unless you're eating from the garbage can of a medical research centre or a hospital or something.

Mark, I do agree that childcare center is the best place to pick up a disease, just this year I had a colleague and nephew being infected with HFM disease. But then with swine flu, it's everywhere la... just imagine ppl sneeze (or dig their nose ewwww...), wipe here and there.. how else not to kena it?

I was just in the London Underground, and I saw some of the sneezing people posters. :)

You know there's one of a little girl sneezing? Still kinda gross, but nicer than that uncle haCHI lah.

On a separate note, it's really hot here in the UK today, and dunno which idiot decided summer would be a good time to do escalator upgrading works. And me lugging around lots of bags and even a suitcase.

Hi Mark,

The original NHS ad I was looking for featured a little boy but since I can only get the uncle Hachi picture with the same message, ok la... acceptable still. :)

Don't they have elevator down there?

Mark said...

Not sure. =-P Usually it's either escalator or elevator, I don't really see them providing both, so I assume if don't have loh. =-P

I prefer Blogspot la. Mumzzy copied my template which I got from the 300+ free template designs provided to Blogspot bloggers.

Kinda confusing tho' when I read Mummzy's blog cos' the design same like mine. hahahahah...

Mark said...

Wah, so many designs? I think Wordpress, not even a hundred. Hm...maybe I should be the one switching =-P

Even got that online baby store in JB with the same design as mine, so people mistake me for their marketer. =-P

At least Mumzzy already has RSS up, hehe. ^_^
